Mt Ruapehu is one of 3 close mountains in the central North Island of New Zealand (the others being Tongariro and Ngauruhoe).

It is also the highest in the North Island (2797m). It is an outdoor playground for skiers, climbers, hikers and sightseers.

The Whakapapa skifield is on Ruapehu's slopes and includes: A visitor centre, several skifields, short to long walks and hikes.

Within Whakapapa’s 550 ha boundary there is excellent skiing and boarding for all levels and all the amenities of an international ski area.

Happy Valley is a separate learners’ area for beginners. There are 30 groomed trails, off-piste areas for intermediates and advanced, and a tobogganing area.

Turoa

Awesome terrain on-piste and off

Turoa offers an excellent variety of terrain for all levels. The highest ski area in NZ, Turoa has 9 lifts, giving access to 500 ha of patrolled terrain. Features include 3 main off-piste areas and a 4 km run! The beginners’ area offers a safe environment with wide, gentle slopes.

Tukino Ski AreaTukino Ski Area

Nestled onto the Desert Road side of Mt Ruapehu, Tukino offers adventure and lack of crowds, coupled with the friendliness and camaraderie only ever found on club-operated fields. Sheltered from prevailing winds, the field is often clear when the rest of the mountain is in cloud. Tukino is snowboard-friendly and is open to alpine climbers as well as skiers. Access is via a 4WD road off the Desert Road about 20 km north of Waiouru.
