The Sky Waka gondola at Whakapapa on Mt Ruapehu has opened for the 2023 summer season!

This gives visitors to our region access to the heart of New Zealand’s North Island - with great views across the Tongariro National Park and beyond.

The Sky Waka gondola takes visitors on a 1.8km journey above Mt Ruapehu's unique volcanic terrain, formed over generations, and to 2020m to the Knoll Ridge Chalet, where you will be able to refuel with different café style food and beverage options.

The ride also provides access to a number of short walks giving visitors to the opportunity to explore the fascinating mix of volcanic rock, pumice, scoria, and sand, on foot. Ranging from 20 minutes return through to 2.5 hours return, the walks – Waterfalls Descent, Skyline Walk, and Meads Wall – commence either at the base of the Sky Waka gondola or at the top. They are well marked to help you navigate through the rocky formations.

The Sky Waka summer season will run until 23 April 2023 - operating from 10am to 4pm each day - depending on the weather. Passes can be bought on arrival on the mountain. Passes cost NZ$39 for adults and $19 for children between 5-17 years old with family passes available for $99. Passes for Gold Card holders are $29.
