Tongariro Alpine Crossing Autumn Hiking

From November till May, trek across a volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts. From June to October, snow and ice means alpine skills and experience are essential - it's best to go with a guide or choose another track.

Typical Autumn Conditions

Conditions are changing fast as winter approaches - sub-zero temperatures and ice are present on the track. Early season snow may also be present.

Alpine skills and equipment, as well as warm and waterproof clothing, are now essential to hike the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Consider the Tama Lakes Track if you aren't experienced or equipped for alpine travel.
